grace, your

grace, your
A formal title used to a duke, duchess, or archbishop. The title has been in use since the sixteenth century and was formerly used when addressing a king or queen as well as those dignitaries mentioned above. The plays of Shakespeare abound in examples of ‘your Grace’; there is even a plural form ‘your Graces’, used when the Lord Chamberlain greets the dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk in Henry the Eighth (2:ii). Arthur Hailey has a duchess in Hotel who is addressed as both ‘your Grace’ and the more informal ‘Duchess’. There is quite separately a first name ‘Grace’ which was introduced by the Puritans at the end of the sixteenth century. They no doubt had religious grace in mind, the grace of God.
